Can anyone recommend a good college for dance in California? I'm interested in public, state schools with good programs in modern. Much obliged!

2 dances dance?.

Twyla Tharp [10 May 2006|04:14pm]

Twyla Tharp came to speak at my university a few weeks ago. She gave just a short lecture, so there isn't much to say, just that my entire dance department jumped at the chance to see her speak, let alone see her at all. She talked about her book, The Creative Habit, but she basically only outlined it. She gave some examples of her theories and invited three different people onstage to help demonstrate which. She has a very bland humour that I like. I also must say, she's a lot older than I thought she'd be.

While some would be having a squealing fit, I've been pretty complacent about it all, so if anyone has any questions on what I may have left out, do ask.

Hey everyone. I recently found a leotard that I purchased for dance and it ends up that I cannot use it. I decided to sell it instead. It is Capezio ABT leotard size XL. It's black with an additional pale blue piece on top and it has double straps. It looks like a tank under the leotard. It's really cute! I usually wear a size medium or large and this one fit me for sizing. I cant send pics because my comp crashed =( If you are interested please comment to this and I will send you a price. I am selling it really cheap too.

[ mood | chipper ]

Hi. I've been a member to this group for a while but have yet to post a word. I'm hoping to become more active within this community so here goes:
I have been dancing for almost five years. I'm in my second year of school working my way towards a B.A. in dance. My focus is ballet but I recently took a belly dancing class and loved it. I'm interested in all types of dancing and I've already studied tap, modern, jazz, hip hop ,step, liturgical (or praise dance) and a little bit of lyrical. I love it all.
Well I guess thats it for now.
Take care!

intro and all that... [01 Jun 2005|04:07pm]

Hi, I'm new!

I took ballet lessons most of my early childhood and just into Jr. High school when the company and studio folded up shop.  The artistic director wasn't happy that the ballet school was supporting the company, and it was tough trying to compete against a town with another ballet company already.

I was just beginning pointe work (2nd year of pointe work, which isn't all that much) when I tried to switch to another studio.  Unfortunately, my feet and the shoes didn't agree with each other, and the teacher who took over my training was down right evil.  So, I quit.

A few years back when I was finding my path or destiny or what ever you want to call the late teen years and early 20's, I knew I wanted to teach, but was unsure what focus or discipline.  The community college I attended had ballet classes taught by one of the main choreographers of the dance studio I grew up in.  After two years of studying there at the community college, I knew this is what I want to do.

I'm currently pregnant and mothering a three year old daughter.  I'm studying via distance learning at the local community college working on the general education requirements for transfer.  Once someone new is born in August, I'm going to resume self training to get myself back up to a decent trained level before I go to transfer into a BFA program.

Right now is just the planning stage for me though.  I'm sorting through the college guide looking for BFA programs that focus equally or close to equally on ballet and modern dance, plus a bit of pedagogy or teaching techniques.  Performance based curriculum doesn't necessarily interest me because I'm not a performer, I'm much more educational bound.

I've finished a list on my personal journal of schools that mostly offer what I'm looking for in their BFA programs, but the tough part in narrowing the school list down is whether either the school offers grad school options for my husband in Anthropology, or if a school in decent commute distance offers what he needs.

Anyways, that's my story!  Nice to meet you all!

New to the community [28 May 2005|12:10pm]

I found this communty and was very interested in it. You don't usually find that many other college dance major communities. I think that being in a dance program in college opens so many possibities to the future performers, teacher, or whatever we decide to persue with dance. I was hoping I could find out more about the programs and opportunites your college offers, to broaden my knowledge of the different schools programs.

I am currently a Senior at Eastern Michigan University, and this is my 2nd year at Eastern and in the program. Our program I think is very aimed towards teaching. It's very small which I enjoy because we get so much one on one attention, but we do have financial problams because of this. Since we only have one studio we have a block of classes which rotate every year. Because of this we have classes that are jam pack, this effects us a lot especially in our comp classes. Last year we didn't make it through our whole syllabus because we had to spend extra days showing our dances for feed back. We couldn't fit everyone in one 3 hour block! Another thing we are fighting for is money for ACDFA. I'm sure all of you have heard of it, if not attended it. Our school lets anyone who wants to attend. The ones performing HAVE to attend, and we get absolutly no money to help us out with registration, or hotel and travel expenses.

Another problem our program is currently facing is our teacher not getting along or even communicating. We only have 3 teachers and none of them get speak to each other. It reminds me much of a defective family. We have teachers backstabing other teachers, and doing things just to spite other teachers. It's aweful.

I guess it sounds like I'm just complaining. I love the program, I believe I am going to be leaving with so much from this school. We have very good teachers, and some awesome guest artists. We have very gifted dancers in our program. I love the fact that our program isn't that competitive, because I don't want to perform in the future, I want to perform now and teach in the future.

So I am just curious how other college programs are run and if there are ways I could bring up to our department director to improve our program. I appreciate any comments, thank you.

2 dances dance?.

hey everyone! i finished my freshman year in college and it went well. i'm looking to transfer to another college though with a better dance program. i had attended cw post of long island university, they offer a bfa dance major. it was alright, i just don't like the program, it's not challenging for me. so if anyone could recommend some schools to me, i would greatly appreciate it. i don't care where they're located, just give me some information please!!

[17 Feb 2005|10:24pm]

Hello all -

My name's Julia, and I'm a junior in high school. You're probably going to ask "well, if you're stil in high school, why are you posting in a COLLEGE community?" So here's the deal: I have a strong interest in becoming a dancer, mostly in becoming a modern dancer with a big name company. But where I live there aren't actually any modern classes offered, and I have to travel and hour from my house just to get decent ballet classes (I live in central Wisconsin.)I've looked at programs at CCM, and also at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. If you guys have expirience w/ these or other college dance programs, I'd love to hear from you.

[04 Dec 2004|04:07pm]

So I just got back from dancing at the first game for Urban Beats (the Hip Hop team at my school). It was awesome!! I seriously havent felt that thrill in sooo long. And the best part was that I was on, lol. I didn't mess up at all. It felt sooo good to just dance.

How sad... [18 Oct 2004|12:38pm]

[ mood | crushed ]

I just heard on the news today that the Dance Theatre of Harlem school in NY is closing because they have no money. Arthur Mitchell, who runs the school, has given up his pension, his welfare, subletted space, etc. to try to keep the school open, but they cannot afford to pay the bills and upkeep necessary to maintain the building.

It's so awful that there isn't something anyone can do, barring a HUGE donation (which excludes all of us). I hate hearing about long-established dance schools and companies being forced to close because of lack of funding. Arts advocacy isn't even enough anymore... What a shame.

[ mood | bouncy ]

A new dance team was started at my school by a gurl that didnt like the policies and practice schedules followed by the other dance team and also the cheerleading squad. She called it the Hip Hop Dance Team instead so she could get it approved.

I saw the signs for it a few weeks ago and thought what the hell I have nadda to lose. So I decided to try out. Well, I got the results back this morning and I am on Varsity :) Yay!!! It's gonna be soo much fun!!! I was sooo happy when I found out. We will be performing for several men's and women's basketball games over the winter. I am soo excited and cannot wait.

The only bad thing about this is that we have 2 practices a week (which isnt really the problem because I can dance for hours on end and never get sick of it). The one practice is when my actual dance classes are scheduled for so now I cannot go to them. My teacher is really lenient tho and he understands that i am in college and need more time. I can still dance on breaks and holidays and everythign so that is good.

[31 Aug 2004|12:03pm]

So I finished my choreography, it's 5 minutes and 5 seconds long. I decided to do a contemporary ballet to symphonic metal...anyway my spelling of terminology sucks since we didn't use it where I started dancing...

What is your favorite dance movie and why?

2 dances dance?.

[06 Aug 2004|04:31pm]

My favorite dance movie is Footloose, even though it's not a "dancey" dance kind of movie.

*The opening scene with the credits and just feet moving,
*Chris Penn learning how to dance,
*Kevin Bacon (and his body double) dancing by himself late at night,
*The prom dancing scene,
...did I mention Kevin Bacon??? I don't think he could have been more adorable!

I just watched it again over the weekend. It's definitely a great movie in general, but the idea of changing a town that bans dancing because you NEED to dance... well, that's just the icing on the cake.

4 dances dance?.

Dance movies! [06 Aug 2004|04:15pm]

[ mood | creative ]

My favorite dance movie would be center stage. I really enjoyed the dancing scenes and the behind the performance parts. the movie really showed what it takes to excel and what dancers go through.

has anybody seen "a time for dancing"? if so what did you think of it?
